expo " ONCE UPON A TIME AT THE VIDEO ARCADE"
POPAI treats the video arcade as his catwalk where the line of historic reality and fiction quickly becomes blurry . The notion of the video arcade hall becomes an allegory for some sort of timeless and liberal public space. And at moments it even appears that the reference to the video arcade just is not there. POPAI borrows the arcade hall as its creative starting point for his imagination, his artistic baseline canvas. “Once upon a time…” on the other hand refers to an undertaking to induce a sense of nostalgia in its beholder. It is up to you to decide whether he succeeds or not. Making use of new emerging technologies in the visual field, “Once upon a time at the arcade” in some way is a revitalisation attempt of the time we were consuming new technologies together (like at the video arcade) whilst at the same time invoking back a very old discussion about what art really is. POPAI puts reality and technology in a blender and sometimes forgets the ingredients he put in at the start. He hopes you like his smoothie and that it will make your eyes pop.
